Resolved Question: Is it true that one can
This is a review on a recent audio book I purchased titled "S.P.Q.R." by Professor Mary Beard (Cambridge University)...and I totally agree with her review...this book was a "rambling, boring mess" ..and could hardly concentrate on it. "This book is a good example of why I've learned more history from novels than from history books. Other reviewers are correct: it's rambling and disorganized. Steven Saylor's "Roma" and "Empire," taken together, cover the same time frame and territory as "SPQR," and although fictionalized they provide a much more palatable and understandable--and in my opinion just as accurate--overview of Roman history. "

  Resolved Question: Old Testament canon
As part of an assignment, I need to find out if there is any truth to the suggestion that the book of Ruth has been changed and that it should not be included in the O.T. canon. From research I have already done, I know that the Jews were meticulous in preserving the Hebrew Scriptures and the O.T. canon was closed around 400 years before Jesus was born. I can find no suggestion that the book of Ruth has ever been excluded from the Hebrew Scriptures. Who would suggest that the book of Ruth had been altered and should not be included in the O.T? And why? Bonus question: I know that the New Testament quotes from or alludes to every O.T. book but two - does anyone know which two O.T. books are not referred to in the N.T? Hope you Bible scholars can help me out with this! The Hebrew Scriptures Palestinian Canon has three sections: The Law, Earlier Prophets and Later Prophets and Additional Writings. Ruth comes under the heading of ‘Additional Writings’ along with Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Song of Songs, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, Esther, Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah and 1st and 2nd Chronicles. The Alexandrian Canon, or Septuagint (LXX) as used in the Roman Catholic O.T., has Ruth under Historical Books. The Palestinian Canon, as used in the Protestant O.T., also has Ruth under Historical Books. As you can see, Alexis, I've been doing more studying. Perhaps you would be kind enough to share your superior wisdom with us all and inform us which five books of the O.T. are not referred to in the N.T. Oh, and the book of Daniel was probably completed circa 530 B.C., shortly after the capture of Babylon by Cyrus in 539 B.C. That Daniel was an accepted part of the Hebrew Scriptures is confirmed by Jesus himself in Matthew 24:15, who referred to the prophet Daniel, quoting 9:27; 11:31 and 12:11. The Son of God acknowledged the book of Daniel, which is good enough for me.
