I have a question on how Liberia was before the civil war. Was the standard of living OK back then? I want to hear experiences from people who were there before 1980. Thanks

How come that these two countries have a similar flag to the American flag? How come countries, in general, look alike sometimes? Poland and Indonesia for example. Do country flags have copyright?

Resolved Question: What went wrong with
I read up on the West African state. It seems like they haid a pretty good chance to succeed: -1815: a Quaker founded a freed-black settlement on the West african coast. -1817-1847: After disputes with their white benefactors, Liberia gained nationhood. -1848: First elections. -1851: First college. -1856: Expansion, incorporating several free black colonies. -1862: Lincoln officially recognizes Liberian independence. -1868: Liberia expands inland. -1875: Liberia wins war with the Grebo. America sends a warship to support. ..........(fast forward a century).......... -2013: Liberia is a poor, backward country with a 15% employment rate and tribal infighting. What went wrong? In 1875, it seemed like they were on their way to African superpower status. With their breech loading rifles and US support, they could have rapidly conquered the Ivory coast, and used the trade profits to build infrastructure, industrialize and educate themselves. They could have then asserted themselves in trans-Atlantic trade and become a maritime power comparable to Britian. You can't blame the British and French border encroachments. Liberia had a full 36 years (1847 - 1883) to build an army after independence. In contrast, India expelled the Portuguese from Goa, and the French from Pondicherry after only 14 years of independence. Is this an example of what Dr. Richard Lynn (Race and IQ) James Watson ('stupid genes') have been saying all along, or is there another logical explanation. http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/libhtml/liberia.html
