Resolved Question: Living conditions for
"Asylum seekers in Nauru are being given access to creature comforts to make their campsite more bearable: TV, movies, computer games, the internet, free overseas phone calls and cricket gear."
The whole point of Nauru is to discourage people from hopping on wooden boats to get to Australia. By the looks of it though, the living conditions of those who have been transferred to Nauru are MUCH better than what would be expected in the countries that these queue jumpers originally came from. Free internet access, computer games, movies/ tv shows and free sports?
It sounds like the Australian government are actually advertising Nauru as a free holiday for a few months (with everyone likely to become permanent residents after their free holiday). Doesn't this actually do the opposite of the entire idea of discouraging people from coming by boats?
I've always been a Labor voter, but their policy on asylum seekers is atrocious. Instead of picking out the genuine refugees, they are basically accepting (nearly) everyone that comes in by boat, hence attracting more and more economic refugees.
Do you think that those who are transferred to Nauru are being given too much? (Tvs, computer games, free internet and calls etc)
