Resolved Question: How has the sahara desert
I notice that there seem to be a lot of mammals/birds/reptiles etc that are endemic to sub-saharan africa (secretary bird, giraffes, many antelope and monkey species). Is this because when the earlier grasslands made way for the sahara, they pushed some of the species south and created a geographical barrier to dispersal? Is that why animals such as deer and bears never expanded their range further south in Africa?
Are there any fossils that explain what kind of animals lived in the sahara when it was a grassland and not desert?

Resolved Question: Re-Flooding the Sahara?
As the Sahara expands to south at a rate of about 30 miles per year. The Sahara currently expands across 3.5 million square miles in southern Africa. As grasslands and dry savannah territory continue to dry out, the Sahara grows. The key cause in the desertification of the Sahara has been attributed to global warming. There was a lake in an area of the Sahara that is below sea level. By building a canal we could re-flood this lake. By the use of 1 or more desalinization plants we could make this a fresh water lake. water could be used for irrigation, the canal could be used for shipping and trade. There is a permanent canal constructed into Thar desert. This supplies water to that region through out the year. People have started growing vegetation on banks of canal and vegetation is growing to surrounding regions.
