Resolved Question: Suharto vs Stalin, who
The USSR always had 190-200 million inhabitants. The highest estimate of the number of deaths during the Great Terror of 1937 is 1.2 million.
In 1965, Indonesia had 100 million inhabitants. And the highest estimate of the number of people killed by US installed Suharto is 1 million.
So is it me or does it mean that the anti-totalitarian effort of the US in Indonesia was twice as deadly as Stalin in his worst year? Why is it that words like Stalinism, Great Terror, 1937 etc, evoke such overwhelming, heavy, unambiguous emotions of horror and disgust in people and the slaughter committed by Suharto doesn't? PS: I know that Stalin committed other crimes like the Holodomor, but I'm comparing the two terror years 1937 and 1965 specifically. As crazy as it sounds, statistically speaking one was twice as safe in the supertotalitarian Soviet Union in its most brutal year than in Indonesia where the US did its best to protect human rights and spread democracy. Or am I just plain stupid?
